Hi there Tarot Friends, Take your so-so readings from flat to 3-D (or even 5-D!)If you find yourself not getting the depth you crave, then you might be stuck in one of these perspectives: - focusing on a singular aspect of a reading (particular card, or image in a card) - thinking about what the card or reading means But there’s a third way - one that turns readings into vivid, intuitive experiences, like stepping through a mirror.
Here in San Antonio, we have a street market/art show called First Friday. Once upon a time I set up a booth there and was doing readings on the street to make a little cash and "get the word out"🙄. I had my son with me at the time and had just bought him a Tarot deck. I encouraged him to do some readings, and he agreed. I did a quick tutorial with him. He was struggling a bit, as is to be expected. I don't remember what exactly I said to him, but I was able to nudge him out of "focusing and thinking" about the reading and into expanded attention. I saw the lightbulb go on.💡
So what is expanded attention?
Expanded attention is using your all your senses and engaging your peripheral vision so to speak. Have you ever been camping at night and heard a weird noise out there? You can't see, so immediately your other senses kick in. Your perception s-t-r-e-c-h-e-s out as far as you can possibly make it go. That's expanded attention. Let's not scare ourselves into expanded perception. Read on to learn the steps to intentionally enter this state of awareness. Ground yourself: the prelude to expanded attentionsteps into expanded attention - close your eyes - take a few deep breaths - listen closely to the environment - feel your butt in the chair, feet on the floor, shirt on your skin These steps should be familiar to you, this is calming and centering. You can do this before seeing a client, or you can do it with the client. Most people are not going to resist this prelude to the reading. Activate your inner eye
- imagine you have an eye in the back of your head - let that eye open and start gazing (this eye can see 360°) - expand your awareness broader, and broader around you, like ripples in water Once you are practiced at this, step 2 will not take a long time. It's just a matter of shifting and opening your perception, like letting your eyes adjust to a dark room. And since I mentioned practice, you may want to practice this when you are not doing readings. Just do it and see what happens. You never know what is just waiting for you to tune and listen.😉 Read the cards with receptive focusNow that you have opened your inner eye, you are ready for the reading. - as you lay cards, keep a gentle focus on the cards - what do you see in totality? - what's your overall sense or feeling? - where are you drawn first? Doing a reading like this is reminiscent of those stereogram books, where you had to gaze a certain way to see the image. Too much trying, too much effort and it breaks the image— kind of like waking up from a dream and trying to hang onto the tail before it slips away. Don't worry so much about seeing the stereogram image. I can't see it either! But I can see it in the cards. Thinking about definitions and "what does this card mean" keeps you trapped in thinking about Tarot. Studying Tarot and thinking about the symbolism are all beneficial activities. If you want to be able to read in 3-D, you need to raise your antennae and receive the information. It doesn't come from your thought processes. Try this out and let me know how it goes. Another time, we will talk about how to use focus in your Tarot readings/practice.
