You're receiving this because you signed up for Tarot Underground, my newsletter for curious Tarot readers who want to go beyond memorizing card meanings and actually use the cards. No Tarot Police. Just more ways to explore the cards. “I’m a good wife,” she kept saying. “I take off my husband’s boots when he comes home.” My 58 year old divorced self is thinking, “Don’t do that. Please don’t do that.” But I didn’t say it. What I did instead was point to the Empress card and talk about her. “The Empress is about abundance and growth. But she doesn’t work hard for it. She lets it come to her. Think about wildflowers in spring. The Earth doesn’t labor to make that happen.” She was probably in her early 30’s. Married. With a child. Working. Going to school. 18 hour days every day. She said she wondered if she was going to be able to keep doing it all. “The Empress doesn’t work hard, “ I said. “She attracts.” I know I should probably back off, she said. “I have OCD and if everything isn’t done the way I want it done then I freak out.” There was more to the reading, but the Empress was the crux of it.
👉👉👉Same party. Different client. He sat down and immediately stated his job title. He repeated it several times. “My job is taking a toll on my health. I’m wondering if I should start looking for something else.” It took a minute to get to the question behind the question, but we got there. Who would I be if I wasn’t my job title?
I told him what I was seeing in the cards —this was worth exploring. I said it looked like he didn’t need to make a decision or move immediately, but it was worth a look. He seemed relieved. He thanked me and said, “It’s something that’s been on my mind.”
As a reader, what I do is offer a perspective based on the cards in front of me. Sure, I had an opinion about what the young woman I was reading for might do. But I didn’t say it. It’s not my job to solve her problem (as I see it), give my opinion, or try to address her OCD. As for the man wondering about his career and identity, we couldn’t solve that in a 15 minute reading. Nor should we. In both of these readings both clients needed room to consider what else might be possible. Not a prescription. A perspective. A point of contemplation. A nudge toward what might resonate.
I think the world needs more Tarot readers. People need a space they can enter full of beautiful and intriguing images that pull at whisps of dreams, and memories and knowings.. A safe place to ponder questions with someone who is not going to judge or medicate them. A place where to look for unasked questions and give them some room to breathe like a good bottle of wine. A few shared minutes to help find the meaning of where they are in space and time. Sound like you?
