Wait❗Don't pull another Tarot card

Chew on this: You don’t have to know exactly what every card in a spread means to keep a reading moving.

In fact, here are a handful of techniques reading at parties and events that keep me from having to reach for another card.

Think about having a conversation with someone.

If they say something and you’re not quite sure what they mean, you don’t shut it down over a bit of confusion, do you?

You might repeat back what you heard. You might ask a question. You might think about something they said earlier that would put it into context.

Or you might just leave it alone and come back to it.

Well it’s the same thing with Tarot.

It’s a conversation.

Instead of asking for more information right away, see what you can do with what’s on the table in front of you already.

Ways to talk through any Tarot card

Here are 5 things you can do when you’re stuck on a card before pulling another one.

And, these are good things to bring into any reading to keep the flow going and to let the person you are reading for follow along.

First, state the obvious.

You might think, everybody knows what the Magician means.

But everybody doesn’t!

Something that seems incredibly obvious to you might be exactly what the person you’re reading for needs to hear.

So don’t be afraid to start with the simple stuff.

Second, notice something and ask a question.

Look at the imagery on the card.

What catches your eye? What does it make you think about?

You can even turn to the person you’re reading for and ask, “What stands out to you about this card?”

Sometimes a simple question is all it takes to get things moving.

Third, give yourself permission to circle back.

You can actually say, “I’m not quite sure why this card is showing up here, so I’m going to come back to it.”

For reals!

Nobody’s going to hang you for that.

Sometimes another part of the reading helps that card make sense later.

Fourth, connect it to another card.

Look around the spread.

Does this card share a theme with another card? (Suit and number are obvious places to start).

Is there a contrast?

Are the two cards like oil and water?

Maybe one card gives you some context for understanding the other.

What gives a reading a life of it’s own is NOT interpreting cards in isolation, it’s overlapping them.

And fifth, if you’re still stuck, pull a clarification card.

This is a last resort most of the time.

The goal isn’t to avoid clarification cards -

It’s to give you the chance to find clarity in what’s already on the table.
