Hi there Tarot Friends, I've been reading Tarot for 30+ years and it's hard to remember what it was like at the beginning! I will say, I miss the New Age Crystal Stores of the 80's and late 90's. Crammed with books and candles and incense and Tarot cards they were so fun to browse. With so much information online and so much merchandise online, it's hard to find a real solid shop anymore. I see so many of these shops start with a lot of books and then watch the shelf space shrink and shrink. It usually happens with the decks too. With fewer and fewer and smaller and smaller stores there's less and less space for Tarot readers to rent space and read. I wish I knewParties and Events is where I shineI didn't start reading at parties and events until 2011 or 2012 (when Neptune entered Pisces🤔). A friend of mine introduced me to it. She moved from Seattle and said she was making a good living at it. I thought she was crazy. San Antonio is the conservative counterpart to hippy, dippy, trippy Austin where I lived in the 80's and 90's. Well she wasn't crazy. Here it is 13 years later and I'm still reading at parties and events! The biggest surprise to me is that I love it so much more than being a "consulting Tarot reader" for lack of a better term. A consulting Tarot reader (or astrologer or rune reader etc) is someone who books 1 on 1 readings with people. It's the classic reader in the back of the store waiting for walk ins. Or more commonly now, the reader with the website where you book a 1 hr reading with your credit card. What I like about parties and eventsParties and events are a fun atmosphere. Everyone is in a good mood, and pretty much no one is looking to get into it with the Tarot reader (but it has happened). The vast majority of the people I read for have NEVER had a reading. I love being their first introduction. The stakes are lower. I'm pre-paid by the host and whoever wants a reading can get one. It takes away the pressure of worrying about getting paid. You might think that these quick readings at a party are just fluff, just for fun, but they are not! Oddly enough, I give some pretty profound readings and insights at these casual events. I think it's because everyone is more relaxed. They aren't coming with a weighty problem that has been brewing for weeks. And with ideas about what I might say. Don't get me wrong. People do ask serious questions. But more often than not, they just toss something out there, and the oracle hits them right between the eyes! The element of surprise is at work at parties and events. Clients are often surprised by their readings. I'm working with unknown factors at parties and events too. I'm pre-paid by the host but I also get tips. How much will it be this time? Will it be busy? Or slow? What will the overall tone of the event and crowd be? There's something primal, something magical, some spark of being a hustler or needing to think on my feet that makes parties and events just light me up. I never know exactly what I'm walking into. Reading at parties and events is perfect for an introvert like me. I don't need to approach anyone. They come to me and I meet some of the most interesting people I would never have otherwise met. Do I make a full time income reading at parties and events? No. Could I make a full time income reading at parties and events? (I'm talking about me, specifically) I don't think so. Not without taking the magic out of it. If you want to read for money, I suggest looking into parties and events and see if it works for you. -Cassandra the Card Reader |
