You’re in the middle of a Tarot reading. You see something in the cards. You think you know what it’s referring to… but you’re not totally sure. So what do you do? Ask. “Is there something going on with work right now?” “Does this feel more like your relationship, or your family?” “Is there a decision you’ve been putting off?” Newsflash: You do not have to sit there silently trying to psychically determine the correct answer.
Sometimes we Tarot readers act like Jianyu Li from The Good Place. Jianyu is the silent, seemingly enlightened monk character who never explains himself, so everyone assumes he’s deeply wise and mysterious. Many of us readers are trying very hard to maintain the appearance of the mysterious spiritual monk who knows things without being told. But honestly? The real Jianyu (Jason Mendoza) is way more fun and interesting. He’s loud, impulsive, and gloriously unfiltered—the kind of person who would just ask what’s going on instead of pretending to already know. [He is also the kind of person who seals himself inside of a trunk where he can’t breathe, but that’s another story.] Just ask the damn questionI almost always start a reading with a question. And then I ask more questions as we go. If something in the cards needs clarification, I might even make another spread position: What exactly is this card referring to? Boom. More information. Tarot is a conversation. You’re allowed to participate in it. You’re allowed to ask the person sitting across from you what the heck is going on. You’re allowed to ask the cards for more information.
